Boys Varsity Baseball vs. Elmira HS

Updated on 06/10/2022

YELLOWJACKETS: 32
CHANTILLY HS: 30

The Chantilly Chargers  Matt Hogle dominated Forest Park Friday night, tossing a one hit shutout in a 4-0 win over the Forest Park Bruins.  Hogle, a sophomore, struck out 11 and walked only 1, as his 76 pitch masterpiece led the Chargers to their second victory of the season.   The only hit of the game for Forest Park came in the top of the 5th, as a well hit ball carried beyond the reach of the rightfielder for a double.  Hogle got out of the inning with a flyout to CF, a groundball back to the pitcher, and then a strikeout to end the only threat of the game for the Bruins.  After that, Hogle only got stronger, striking out four of the last six batters he faced, including striking out the side in the 7th, to put the game away.

Offensively, Chantilly got on base often early, but had trouble putting runners across the plate.  Tommy Vance led off the bottom of the 1st with a broken bat single in the infield, and then Mike Sciorra dropped down a perfect bunt single to the right side, with Vance aggressively taking third on the play.  However, two pop outs and a groundout, and the Bruins were out of it.

The second inning started similar to the 1st.  Aaron Osborne led off with a HBP, and Colby Ryan, singled to center.  Again,  Chantilly had two men on with nobody out.  A pickoff play and a lineout seemed to indicate that the rally was again going to fizzle.  But then Matt Galle strolled to the plate, and calmly drilled a run scoring double into the left center gap, and Chantilly led 1-0.

In the third, Chantilly broke it open. With one out, Sonny Romine reached on an error by the Forest Park thirdbaseman.  Eason Recto followed with a single to left, and Ben McGrath was hit by a pitch to load the bases.  A strikeout made it two outs in the inning.  Colby Ryan then hit a hard grounder that the Bruins secondbaseman could not handle to drive in a run, and it was 2-0.  Kyle Rhodes then ripped the next pitch into left for a 2 out, 2-run single, and Chantilly was up 4-0, and had their breathing room.

Over the rest of the game, the Chargers got offense out of Ben McGrath with a single and a walk to Tommy Vance, but did not score any more runs.  The Chargers ended up with 4 runs on 8 hits and no errors.  The Bruins had no runs on 1 hit, and 2 errors.

Hogle’s performance was backed by solid Chantilly defense.  Matt Galle made a spectacular play in the first, diving to his left at second to smother a hard hit ball and throw out the Bruins runner by a half step.  It brought back memories of Jake Acosta from last year!  Colby Ryan had a strong game behind the plate, completing two strikeouts by Hogle with throws to first to nail runners.  The rest of the defense all pitched in with strong performances, including Vance at short , Recto at first, Hogle himself off the mound, and Sciorra in center.

Chantilly (2-0) faces off against highly ranked Lae Braddock Saturday the 16th at 1:00 PM, and has Stonewall Jackson on Thursday Night at 6:30 PM.
